When Spirituality Keeps You Waiting for Tomorrow
What if spirituality could also become another way of postponing life?
I know. It sounds strange. After all, spirituality is supposed to bring us closer to ourselves. To help us trust life more deeply, reconnect with who we are and remember that we’re part of something bigger. But lately I’ve caught myself wondering whether, sometimes, it’s not spirituality itself, but the narrative around it that does the opposite.
When life feels uncertain, we’re told we’re in the void. When everything starts falling apart, we’re told it’s because something bigger is coming. If relationships end, plans change or we question everything, we’re reminded that this is what happens before a breakthrough.
I understand why these messages resonate. I’ve been there too. I’ve looked for reassurance. I’ve wanted someone to tell me that one day all of it would make sense.
But after a while I realised that almost everything I was reading was directing my attention towards tomorrow.
“Hold on. Trust. Your breakthrough is coming. Your future self is waiting.”
Without even noticing, I stopped living the life that was already happening because I was constantly looking at the one that was supposed to arrive.
And I’m not saying that the void or what many people call a “quantum leap” aren’t part of the spiritual journey. I believe they are. I’ve experienced those periods myself. But I’ve also come to see that they are not separate from life itself. They are life.
The spiritual world is beautiful.
Realising that we are spiritual beings can bring one of the deepest feelings of coming home. But yes, there is a “but.” We are spiritual beings living in human bodies, in a material world that constantly triggers us in different ways. That’s exactly why I believe spiritual practice matters. Not as something we’ll finally embody one day, but as something that happens today. Something that holds our hand and keeps pointing our inner compass back towards love when life keeps asking us to look somewhere else.
These reminders that we’re spiritual beings living in human bodies come in many forms. The other day I caught myself thinking about the anniversary of moving to Copenhagen. “One year already… wow.” What surprised me wasn’t that a year had passed. It was that I didn’t really feel it. Since “Just for today” became more than beautiful words and became something I actually live, time has started feeling different. Less like years passing and more like moments being lived. Then after having this self talk I picked up my phone to look through photos from the past year because I love looking at old pictures, but it struck me that even something as simple as scrolling through photos takes us somewhere that isn’t happening anymore.
Back into the past.
Tomorrow pulls us forward.
Photos bring us back.
And somehow, without even realising it, we spend very little time exactly where life is unfolding.
Today.
But come on… we’re human, right?
I’m not saying we should stop remembering, and watching old pictures. I’m definitely not saying we should stop dreaming because I love dreaming, I love making plans and imagining what’s possible.
Writing this reminds me why spiritual practice is so important, not because it asks us to leave the world behind, but because it reminds us to keep returning to the present while allowing memories, dreams and everything happening around us to remain part of our lives.
We’re human. We have memories. We imagine the future.
The question is simply where we choose to live most of the time. Because that’s what becomes our practice.
The more I explore spirituality, the more I notice that different traditions often point towards the same place, even if they use different language.
Neuroscience speaks about repetition. Joe Dispenza speaks about becoming familiar with the emotions of the reality we want to create before we see external evidence.
Hermetic philosophy reminds us: As above, so below.
And Reiki begins with three simple words. Just for today.
Not because tomorrow doesn’t matter. Because today is where life happens.
There is something I keep coming back to.
The relationship between feeling and reality doesn’t only move in one direction. We tend to wait for life to give us proof before we allow ourselves to feel differently. But what if it also works the other way around? What if the feeling can come first?
Not as a performance. Not as pretending everything is fine. But as a quiet experiment. A question you ask yourself somewhere in the middle of an ordinary day: what if?
What if abundance is already moving towards me? What if this situation is already shifting? What if I allowed myself, just for fifteen minutes today, to feel the way I want to feel?
Abraham Hicks calls this “what if.” I call it playing the game with energy. And you don’t have to believe in it completely to try it. You only have to be willing to give it fifteen minutes.
This is not about suppressing what you are going through. If you are in a difficult season, that is real. Changing the narrative won’t always feel natural and that is completely okay. But somewhere inside that day, there might be fifteen minutes where you allow yourself to dream, to speak to yourself the way you want to feel, to play with the possibility that things are already moving — even when you can’t see it yet.
Instead of waiting for tomorrow’s quantum leap, step by step, find that time within the day. Not to deny what you feel. But to feel your feelings and not forget to play this game called life. Think of it like a cheat meal — except this one is actually healthy for you. Because gradually it won’t add weight. It will expand your energy through the contact with your True Self.
There isn’t one timeline for awakening.
There isn’t one number of days you’ll spend in the void before everything suddenly changes.
Everyone walks a different path. Some things shift quietly, some take years or happen in ways we never expected.
I’ve stopped trying to calculate when my breakthrough will come.
Instead, I started asking a different question.
How do I want to meet today?
Then another question naturally followed.
It’s something I often invite people to reflect on before a Reiki session.
What if you truly believed that we are energy? What if everything aligned with who you really are is already possible? What if the abundance you’re dreaming about isn’t waiting somewhere in the future, but can begin to be lived today by opening yourself to the people, opportunities and experiences arriving in unexpected ways, always for your highest good?
I keep coming back to these questions. Not because every day feels easy or because I’ve figured everything out but because today is the only place where I can actually live.
This doesn’t mean denying what we feel. If you’re grieving, grieve. If you’re angry, feel the anger. If you’re scared, let yourself be scared.
This isn’t about pretending.
It’s about not making your current experience the only reality your mind rehearses every day.
If peace is the quality you’re asking life for, practice returning to peace. If trust is what you’re asking for, practice trust. If gratitude is what you’re longing for, notice what is already here.
Not after life gives you proof.
Today.
Again.
Not because you’re trying to convince the Universe, because you’re teaching your own mind where home is.
As I’m writing this article, I can feel myself falling into exactly the same trap.
The temptation to leave you with one magical sentence. One missing ingredient. One practice that will finally help you move through the void.
But that would completely miss the point. I don’t have a recipe. Everyone walks through these seasons differently.
Some people need silence, some need therapy, movement, meditation, need to cry, need to laugh until their stomach hurts or some need all of it.
Looking at spirituality with my feet firmly grounded on the earth, and after going through this whole cosmic rodeo myself, I’ve come to believe that the void may prepare us for something bigger. At the same time, I think its meaning isn’t found somewhere at the end of it, but in the way we choose to live through it.
In moments like this, I want to remind myself, and everyone who resonates with these words, that I don’t want to postpone my life until I find the answer. Whatever this season eventually brings, I am already creating my inner reality through the way I choose to meet it.
As above, so below. Not tomorrow. Not when I finally reach this “quantum leap”. Today.
This is why I keep coming back to Gokai. Not because they promise a better future. Because they remind me how I want to live this day.
And this is exactly where Reiki begins. Not tomorrow. Today.
Writing this article I kept seeing it in every single principle. Each one holds a simple question worth asking.
Just for today — why not tomorrow but today? Because today is the only place where life actually happens. Tomorrow is a thought. Today is where you are.
Do not anger — why do I feel anger? Not to judge it. To understand what it is trying to show you. Anger is rarely about the situation. It is usually about something underneath it.
Do not worry — can I do something in this moment to change what I am worrying about? If yes, do it. If not, there is a reminder I keep coming back to. If a problem is fixable, worry is unnecessary. If it cannot be fixed, worry is equally useless since it provides no benefit. This one helps me more than almost anything else. (And I just rephrased Dalai Lama 😉 )
Be grateful — what can I feel grateful for today? Name even one thing. And stay with that feeling for a moment. Not as a technique. As a return.
Be honest in your work — are you true to your True Self? Are you showing up wholeheartedly for your own pure experience? By this I mean the bright light you are. Not the version shaped by fear or expectation. The one underneath all of that.
Be compassionate to yourself and others — are you allowing yourself to be human? Not a project. Not a problem to fix. Just a person moving through life, doing the best they can with what they have today.
There is a scene in Only Lovers Left Alive that has stayed with me for years.
Eve says: “How can you have lived for so long and still not get it? This self obsession is a waste of living. It could be spent surviving things, appreciating nature, nurturing kindness and friendship, and dancing. You have been pretty lucky in love though, if I may say so.”
This is my favourite quote. I have always returned to it when asked what happiness means for me. And now I see it not only as “my happiness” but as a beautiful reference to spirituality. The spirituality that can also become another form of self-obsession. Always healing, analysing, checking whether we’ve finally reached the next level.
But meanwhile, as Eve pointed out, life is happening.
The sunlight coming through the window. A walk with no destination. Music. Nature. Friendship. Dancing in your kitchen.
None of these moments are distractions from the path.
They are the path.
I still believe life can surprise us in ways we can’t imagine and I believe we grow and breakthroughs happen, but I don’t want to spend my life waiting for the day they arrive.
I don’t want to postpone peace until everything looks the way I imagined. I don’t want to postpone joy until I have proof that I’m on the right path. I don’t want tomorrow to become the compass for today.
This is what Just for today has been teaching me all along.
Life isn’t waiting on the other side of the breakthrough.
Life has been here the whole time.
So I choose to believe.
I choose to dream, enjoy and to live as an expression of my true self.
Just for today. Not tomorrow.
Because, what do I have to lose if I trust?
It’s simply the way I choose to play this beautiful game called life.
The ultimate purpose of Reiki is not to change your energy from the outside or to work with external factors. It is to come home to yourself. For yourself. Because the greatest power that will bring you peace in this life is love for yourself and connection with your True Self.
Does that happen in one day? Maybe on Instagram in a short reel, it looks that way. But for most people it takes time. And that is completely normal. We are surrounded by so many external factors and that is simply what life looks like.
Slowly, in your own timing, you can come back to yourself. To rediscover the great bright light that is there. That was always there. And always will be.
I know there are moments in life we simply have to move through. Spirituality cannot erase them or work like a magic pill, but it can help us stay connected to ourselves while we are inside them.
So before I leave you with one more reminder to come back to just for today, I want to tell you this:
You are made of the same energy that creates everything. You are one of a kind. You are love.
And please, take a moment to thank yourself for reading until the end. This article speaks about a season that is never as simple to live through as it may sound on paper, and yet you are still here.
Just for today, let that be enough. And don’t forget your daily healthy “cheat meal” or as my friend found written on a wall somewhere “Happy loco” moment. Talk with the universe. Because you are the universe.
